Excel CONCAT Function
The Excel CONCAT Function, which replaced CONCATENATE function and available from 2019, combines text from multiple ranges and/or strings. However, this function does not provide delimiter or ignore empty arguments. Unlike CONATENATE function, CONCAT function can join range of cells or strings.
List of Examples:
- Join text from different cells with & operator.
- Simple join of text from multiple cells [Manually joining cells]
- Join text manually by inserting them inside CONCAT(“text”, “text”).
- Manually join text and insert space from another cell reference.
- Join text from multiple cells with “AND”.
- Join text from multiple cells and separate with space. [CONCATENATE (A1, ” “, B1)
- Adding common email with CONCAT function.
- Join a range of cells with CONCAT.
- Merge two or more non-contiguous cells with CONCAT.
- CONCAT all the cells in a column and separate the text by comma.
Syntax
CONCAT(text1, [text2],…)
where,
text: is the text or the reference to the cells with text.
Note: Maximum 253 text arguments are allowed in CONCAT function. If the resulting string exceeds 32, 767 characters (cell limit), CONCAT function returns #VALUE! error.
Example 1: Join text from different cells with & operator:
To join text from different cells with & operator, we use the formula =C6&D6&E6; however, they are not separated by commas or spaces. This is just the simple and easy to way to join text from different cells.
Example 2: Simple join of text from multiple cells:
To simply join text from different cells with CONCAT, we need to write =CONCAT(text1, text2, ..textn), where text is the text or cell reference of the text. However, the joined texts are not separated by commas or spaces.
Example 3: Join text manually using CONCAT:
Additionally, we can also join texts by writing them within CONCAT. We can, for example, write =CONCAT(“wiki”, “tek”, “kee”), and we will get wikitekkee in one cell.
Example 4: Manually join text and insert space from another cell reference.
To join text manually from different cells and insert space from another cell reference, users have to follow two steps:
Step 1: Leave space in a cell. In our example, we pressed space twice in column E (Started) and then wrote the formula =C6&E7&D7.
Step 2: Write the formula =C6&E7&D7, and press ENTER. See the image below.
Example 5: Join text from multiple cells with AND:
We can join texts from multiple cells by using AND.
Example 6: Join text from multiple cells and separate them with space:
We can join text from multiple cells and space by the older version of CONCAT–CONCATENATE.
Example 7: Join first and last names and add common email:
The formula is =CONCAT(C6, D6, “@gmail.com”), which joins the first and last names and adds @gmail.com.
Example 8: Join a range of cells with CONCAT:
The CONCAT function, which replaced CONCATENATE, can join range of cells. The previous version–CONCATENATE–cannot join range of cells. The formula is =CONCAT(Range of cells).
Example 9: Merge two or more non-contiguous ranges using CONCAT:
To join two or more non-contiguous ranges of cells, we need to use the formula =CONAT(range1, range2) as shown in the following image.
Example 10: CONCAT all the cells in a column and separate the text by comma:
To join texts in a column and separate them by commas, users need to use COMMA within double quotation, and the formula is =CONCAT(text1, “,”, text2, “,”, ..textn)
